I chose to breastfeed for a multitude of reasons. The health benefits for LB and me. The economic reasons - although it isn’t “free” like some would think, but it is less expensive than formula. But my breastfeeding journey isn’t exactly how I “planned” it to go.
I started breastfeeding the moment Laura Beth was born. She latched very well and did great breastfeeding in the hospital. Once we were home, after 24 hours (thanks COVID), I continued to breastfeed. LB struggled latching when we were home, so I began using nipple shields. I thought we were doing great.
We went to her first doctors appointment, and like most babies, LB dropped some weight. The pediatrician suggested I pump and offer a bottle to Laura Beth and record how many ounces a day she was getting. I did this for a few days, and that was it. Pumping and bottle feeding was it for us. We got into a great routine; her daddy, GiGi, and Aunt Millie were able to feed her and I loved knowing how much my little girl was getting to eat. It made me feel good and reassured that she was eating enough.
I told myself from the moment I found out that I was pregnant that I wouldn’t allow myself to feel defeated if breastfeeding did not work out for us. I prayed and thanked God that breastfeed did work out, and he had a special plan and way for it to happen.
Although my story isn’t a traditional breastfed baby story, it is what has worked for us and I am proud of our story and thankful for a good supply and a healthy baby girl.
We are now (almost) three months into elusively pumping. We have found the perfect bottles and nipple size for Laura Beth (who knew there were so many!), a great routine, all of the necessary must haves for exclusively pumping and we are healthy and happy!
